Heat, sleep, and why you feel so good the next morning
One of my favourite things about sauna and why it actually works.
Evening sessions are my favourite.
There's something about ending the day in the heat that nothing else really replicates. You walk in carrying whatever the day threw at you and you walk out feeling like you actually get to leave it there.
But the part I love most isn't even the session itself. It's the next morning. I sleep better after an evening sauna than almost anything else I've tried. And once I started looking into why, it actually made a lot of sense.
So why do you sleep better after an evening sauna?
Sauna heat causes your core body temperature rises. Then when you get out and cool down, that temperature drops. That drop is actually one of the key signals your body uses to initiate sleep. You're essentially giving your nervous system a very clear cue that it's time to wind down.
On top of that, the heat triggers a release of endorphins and reduces cortisol, the stress hormone that keeps your brain buzzing when you're trying to sleep. So by the time you get home, shower, and get into bed, your body is genuinely ready in a way it often isn't after a normal evening of screens and stimulation.
The sweet spot for sleep benefits seems to be an evening session ending at least an hour before bed. This gives you enough time to cool down fully and let your body settle. Everyone's different but that's the window that tends to work best.
If you've been struggling to sleep, this is worth trying.
Not as a cure, not as a prescription. Just as something that might actually help and also feels really good in the meantime. Evening sessions run until 9pm. Come wind down.
