The summer that keeps going

Stop mentally checking out of a season that isn't actually over.

Somewhere around the third week of August, people start talking about summer in the past tense.

Did you have a good summer? What did you do this summer? It's basically over isn't it.

And I get it. Work is getting busy, schedules are tightening, the back to school ads have been running since July. But here's the thing, it's not actually over. Calgary stays warm well into September. The patios are still full. The evenings are still long enough. Summer didn't get the memo that we've mentally moved on.

And yet most of us spend the last few weeks of it already somewhere else in our heads.

There's something worth noticing about that.

We do it with seasons, with weekends, with vacations. We're so good at anticipating the end of something good that we stop being present for the part that's still happening. The last few days of a trip are spent half at home already. The Sunday scaries start Saturday night. August becomes a eulogy for a summer that hasn't actually ended.

It's a hard habit to shake. But it's worth trying.

The antidote isn't doing more.

It's not cramming in every patio, every camping trip, every thing you meant to do in June. That's just a different kind of not being present.

It's more about actually showing up to what's already in front of you. The warm evening that's happening right now. The long weekend that hasn't been planned to death. The Tuesday after work that could be a sauna and nothing else.

Summer doesn't need a grand finale. It just needs you to still be in it.

September will come. The routine will return. The weather will turn eventually.

But right now it's still August. And August in Calgary is genuinely, quietly beautiful if you let yourself notice it.
