The last of the light
Using the shorter days as a reason to be more intentional.
October is in full swing. You leave for work in the dark and come home in the dark and somewhere in between the days got shorter without you really noticing. The light that was so easy and abundant all summer suddenly feels precious. Like something worth paying attention to.
Most people respond to this by cramming. Squeezing every last errand, workout, and social obligation into the shrinking window of daylight like they're racing against something and then they wonder why October feels exhausting.
What if the shorter days are actually an invitation?
Not to do less necessarily. But to be more deliberate about what you do with the light you have.
There's something about the October sky in Calgary, that specific low golden afternoon light, that is genuinely one of the most beautiful things about living here and most of us are sitting under fluorescent office lighting when it happens. So next time you’re sitting at your desk during sunset, take 5 minutes to look out the window or stand outside and say goodbye to the daylight with intention.
The days are getting shorter. That's not a problem to solve. It's just a reason to pay attention.
Intentionality is a muscle.
And like most muscles, the sauna is a good place to build it. When you're in the heat with no phone and no agenda, you get a rare chance to actually check in with yourself. What do you want? What's been draining you? What are you looking forward to?
Not in a journaling exercise kind of way. Just in a quiet, nobody is asking anything of you right now kind of way.
October is actually one of our favourite months at Offline. The contrast between the cold outside and the warmth inside starts to feel really meaningful in a way that's hard to explain until you've experienced it. You walk in from a crisp October evening and the heat hits you and it just feels exactly right.
